IGAD - 33rd Extraordinary Summit: The Peace of Southern Sudan on the Horizon
The President of the Republic, Mr. Ismail Omar Guelleh, arrived Wednesday, September 12, 2018, in the early afternoon, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to take part in the work of the 33rd Extraordinary Summit of the leaders of the member countries of IGAD. on South Sudan. The summit is devoted to finalizing the peace agreement signed on August 5, 2018, in Khartoum, Sudan, between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his main rival Riek Machar, leader of the South Sudanese rebellion. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf accompanies the President in this trip.
During this meeting, the final peace agreement, negotiated for weeks between the belligerents in Khartoum, Sudan, to put an end to this civil war, which has plagued southern Sudan for five years, must be definitively signed.
In addition, the return of Eritrea to the regional organization (IGAD) is on the agenda of this Summit which will also formalize the reconciliation between Eritrea and Djibouti.
Heads of State and Government of IGAD member countries have arrived in Addis Ababa, and Eritrea's President Afeworki is also expected to sign at the summit.
