Sudan : Arrival of Mr. Abiy Ahmed, for an mediation attempt

Since the beginning of the week, the streets of Khartoum have remained almost deserted. The city, under the control of paramilitary militias, is living in slow motion. And it is in this context that the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, arrived Friday, June 7, undertakes a mediation visit between the military who overthrew on April 11, 2019, President Omar El-Bashir and the opposition.

Welcomed on his descent by Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, the head of the junta, Abiy Ahmed is preparing to meet the leaders of the Military Council at first and then, some leaders of the dispute determined to obtain a transfer of the power to civilians as soon as possible.

An opposition spokesman confirmed that they had agreed to meet with the Ethiopian Prime Minister and that he hoped that this mediation and the position of the African Union as well as international pressure would make the military power more reasonable.

It should be recalled that the Prime Minister's visit comes the day after the suspension of Sudan's participation in the African Union (AU) until "the actual establishment of a civilian transitional authority".

AU Chairman of the Peace and Security Council, His Excellency Patrick Kapuwa, Ambassador of Sierra Leone, said that the African organization "will automatically impose punitive measures on individuals and entities that have prevented the establishment of 'a civil authority'. So business to follow.
