AU - Malagasy Election : Statement by the President of the Commission on the final results of the electoral process in Madagascar


Addis Ababa, January 8, 2019

The President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, takes note of the proclamation today by the High Constitutional Court (HCC) of the final results of the second round of the presidential election in Madagascar, which took place on 19 December 2018. He warmly congratulates Mr Rajoelina Andry Nirina on his brilliant election on the basis of a promising program, which has garnered widespread popular support.

The President of the Commission congratulates all the parties involved in the electoral process for their efforts and sacrifices, which made it possible to conclude the presidential election in a climate that was calm and rich in qualitative lessons.

In this respect, he congratulates the Malagasy people, the Acting President of the Republic of Madagascar, the Prime Minister and the Government, the HCC, the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI), the defense and security forces, the civil society and other stakeholders, for demonstrating to the world and to Africa their high sense of responsibility and political maturity, as well as their deep commitment to peace, stability and democracy.

The President of the Commission stresses the imperative for all political actors to scrupulously respect the laws of the Republic and the prerogatives of the HCC in proclaiming the final results of the presidential election. Respect for the results of the elections is an indisputable guarantee that will preserve and consolidate the democratic gains and results achieved by Madagascar on the macroeconomic level.

The President of the Commission encourages the elected President to use all the forces of the nation to consolidate democracy, to privilege national reconciliation to work in the best interests of the nation, and to be fully aware of the great historical responsibility that is his to the Malagasy people as a whole.

The President of the Commission reiterates his appeal to all Malagasy political actors and their supporters to refrain from resorting to violence and to protect this new democratic gains in the national unity.
