Mr. Wolde-Giorgis, who was the president of this brother country for more than a decade, died last Saturday at the age of 94.
Mr. Wolde-Giorgis was President of Ethiopia from 2001 to 2013. He has also held various government bonds across the country, in various capacities, for nearly six decades.
In recent years, Wolde-Giorgis has been active in efforts to foster the reconciliation of the former enemies, Ethiopia and Eritrea, who ended two decades of hostilities in July 2018.
Speaking at the funeral, the current Ethiopian President, Sahle-Work Zewde, said that Mr. Wolde-Giorgis has served his country in or at the head of several governments and over more or less favorable times.
